Is it a bush shirt? Is it a great coat? Nah mate, it's kind of a mix! Affectionately also called a Swannie (after a famous wool brand Swanndri, though these are manufactured elsewhere in New Zealand), these wool coats are a bit legendary.

Back in the day (70-90's ish), some New Zealand soldiers found missing need in the uniform and privately purchased olive Swannies - to which the NZ Defence Force thought bugger that, let's have some made for proper uniform. Voila, NZDPM wool jackets arrived on the scene. These things are thick, heavy weight wool and bulky. Kind of why they didn't get adopted that well. In the end, NZDF rolled out the NZDPM windproof. Many farmers took up stock of these wooly coats when they could, as they are great for the cold outdoors and a classic Kiwi style garment.

This version of the NZDPM wool jacket has 4 chest pockets - a bit more ritzy than the 2 pocket one. The hood has a draw cord, button fastening front and is removable with a zipper (these have a finer zip and are not compatible with our spare hoods). The 4 pocket version is generally a little heavier in weave thickness compared to the 2 pocket version (there are some exceptions, varying by manufacturer), on average weighing in at around 1.5kg. In ''Good'' condition, these have variation in shades and may have areas of wear, but these are quality oldschool, grunty coats that will serve you well. No wonder they are collectable now -this version is even more sought after!
