Description
*Note* These bivy bags waterproofing will be compromised in some way - some may have missing/decayed seal tape, delaminated areas in the Gore-Tex or small holes. They may be salvageable with some TLC or usable for spare parts. See last 2 photos for some examples.
The Bundeswehr (Germany Army) issues these as 'sleeping bag covers' to protect from mud and water alike. Originally made from Gore-Tex material to repell water and keep the user dry - these ones have been through the ringer and not quite made it out the other side. Some may be repairable with enough care or otherwise better used for parts or storing not so vital gear during the warmer seasons.
The front has a split opening down to roughly half way which makes getting in and out of these a lot easier than US designs for example. What we will say though is make sure to pitch a basha when using one of these - you will need to keep some of the front open to help keep you breathing!
If you don't have the capacity for a tent and want to go lightweight in your outdoor adventures, then give a bivy camping a go!
